A new tool to monitor lumber dealer insights

Principia's Lumberyard Sentiment Dashboard offers unvarnished survey data.

Principia Consulting, a part of the Dodge Construction Network, has unveiled a new resource that may be of interest for lumber dealers of all stripes. The Lumberyard Sentiment Dashboard, launched just this month, promises to feature a "continuous stream of ongoing, monthly survey data" with the aim of illuminating "the evolving perspectives of lumberyard dealers on current market trends."

More than 80 percent of respondents believe their revenues will increase over the next 12 months compared to last year.

Principia doesn't offer specifics on its respondents or how its data is collected, though the responses from the October 2024 survey seem to track with emerging trends. A snapshot of the most recent survey results are listed below.

  • Eighty-two percent of respondents agree that "lead times from our distributors and/or product suppliers are improving."
  • The same number (82 percent) believe their revenues in the next 12 months will exceed revenues from the previous 12 months.
  • Fifty-nine percent say "price increase are negatively impacting my business."
  • "Inventory turns, on the whole, are decreasing," say 47 percent of respondents.
  • Forty-three percent believe they've lost business to big-box competitors in the past year.
  • Thirty-two percent foresee a "downturn in residential construction in the next 12 months."
