NAICS 444 sales down from year ago
Sales of NAICS 444 category retailers – that’s the wide-arching industry of building material dealers, home centers, hardware stores and garden equipment and supplies dealers—showed an unsurprising increase from March to April.
But for the second month in a row, data from the United States Census Bureau shows NAICS 444 sales down compared to the same periods in 2022 and 2021.
The Advance Monthly Sales for Retail and Food Services report, released Tuesday morning, showed sales for Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers came in at an unadjusted figure of $43,893,000,000 in April. That’s down
On an adjusted basis, April NAICS 444 sales increased 0.5 percent from March.
Compared to a year ago, that’s down 5.7 percent, and compared to April of 2021, the latest tally is down 6.2 percent.
Looking at the retail industry in totality, sales increased 0.4 percent according to the Census Bureau report. Of thirteen major retail categories tracked, seven were down from April of 2022. Restaurants and nonstore retailers outperformed the other categories.
On a month-to-month bases, using adjusted figures, five of thirteen categories showed declines. Miscellaneous store retailers enjoyed the largest gain—2.4. percent. Nonstore retailers had the second-best showing: up 2.4 percent.
