Brinkmann’s Paint & Hardware
Opened in 1976, this True Value dealer claims it’s the world’s first net-zero energy retailer. The hardware, with four stores in New York state, has dedicated itself to erasing its carbon footprint completely, it wrote on its website. Besides LED lighting inside and out, the company’s Miller Place location, the firm said, “has a rooftop solar array — a bank of 304 photovoltaic cells — that generates power for the building during the day.”

67 Hardware
Let’s cut to the chase: If you want to see one of the best Case pocketknife displays anywhere, 67 Hardware has it. This vintage hardware landmark in rural Jonesville, N.C., has everything from guitar strings to 60” corrugated pipe. It has a general store vibe, but also packs a strong home-improvement punch. Named for the highway that runs through Yadkin County, 67 checks all the boxes of all-star service and selection. And it’s even a forward-thinking early adopter of digital retailing.
