Eye on Retail: Target going head to head with Prime Day
Target Corp. is firing back at Amazon’s Prime Day by launching its own mega-sales event — with an added hook to lure customers.
The discounter’s new event, called Target Deal Days, will run the same time as Prime Day (July 15 and 16), and feature “two days of red hot online sales.” Unlike the Prime event, however, no membership is required to shop the Target sale. (Target REDcard holders will receive an additional 5% discount.)
Target is sure to have plenty of company in challenging Prime Day — even online marketplace eBay is entering the fray, with a ‘crash day’ sale on July 15. And RetailMeNot is predicting 250 retailers will participate through offering their own deals during the Prime Day event, not through Amazon specifically.
Last year, Target countered Prime Day with a one-day sale that the retailer said was one of its biggest online sales days of the year.
“This year, we’re giving guests more discounts across even more of our assortment with two days to save on hundreds of thousands of items and offering the best options in retail for delivery and pick up on their terms, including same-day,” said Mark Tritton, executive VP and chief merchandising officer, Target.
Target did not release specific deal information, but said the sale will feature “rarely-on-sale, exclusive home, apparel and toy brands on hundreds of thousands of items and new deals each day.” It will include both national and Target brands.
In announcing the sale, the discounter stressed its same-day delivery and pickup options. In addition to utilizing its Shipt service to have items delivered to doorsteps within hours, customers can select order pickup (or drive up) when purchasing and pick up their order at their local Target.
Target offers free two-day shipping on most online to holders of its REDcard. It also provides free two-day shipping to all customers who spend $35 or more.
