Hammond Lumber expands to 12 locations
Belgrade, Maine-based Hammond Lumber Co. will acquire three building material stores located in Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor and Pemaquid, from Sanford, Maine-based New England Building Materials.
The move brings the 58-year-old Hammond Lumber footprint from nine Maine locations to 12.
"We feel strongly that investing in a permanent presence will give us the opportunity to provide more of the personalized service that drives our customer service excellence," said Mike Hammond, VP Hammond Lumber. "We hope to build on the great foundation that Poole Brothers established long ago by doing whatever it takes to support our building professionals and walk-in retail customers.”
Run today by the third-generation owners, Hammond Lumber was founded in 1953 by Kip and Verna Hammond.
“The mid-coast stores are a good fit for Hammond’s organization” said Don Collins, CEO of New England Building Materials, “while we feel that our new model of concentrating on fewer, but substantially larger, delivery centers will allow us to compete more successfully in the southern markets, from Portland to Cape Cod.”
New England Building Materials, which had previously operated out of eight locations in Massachusetts and Maine, will be focusing primarily on the larger markets of eastern Massachusetts and southern Maine, concentrating on the professional building community by delivering from two major sales and distribution centers, one in Lakeville, Mass., and the other in Sanford, Maine. Current locations in Windham and Springvale, Maine, will be absorbed into the 40-acre Sanford campus. The Norwood, Mass., store will become a kitchen design center, with all building material deliveries done out of the Lakeville center, which was acquired in 2009. It will also continue to operate its pine mill in Sanford.
The majority of the employees at the three new Hammond locations will become employees of Hammond upon closing, while others will be staying with New England Building Materials’ Sanford location. The closing is expected to take place on or about Oct. 21.
