Lowe’s categories: By the numbers
Among Lowe’s 15 product categories, appliances generates the most sales. In the fiscal year ended Feb. 3, appliance sales at Lowe’s reached $13.08 billion.
The next closest product category, in terms of 2022 sales, is lumber at $9.499 billion; which is followed by seasonal & outdoor living, at $8.860 billion.
Here’s a breakdown of Lowe’s product-category performance each year since 2013:
As the interactive graphic above illustrates, it’s not uncommon for categories to appear and disappear as Lowe’s adjusts its method of classifying its merchandise. For instance, “Tools & Hardware” combined as a single category until 2019, when the two were separated.
In 2013, appliances were included in the same category as kitchens at the top of the list. Appliances became a stand-alone category in 2016. As a stand-alone category, appliances grabbed the top spot in 2019, and it has held position ever since.
Lowe’s made another adjustment in 2022: Sales that were previously classified as “lighting” were moved into “electrical” and “décor.” To a large extent, that adjustment explains the respective 50.8 percent and 40.3 percent year-over-year gains in electrical and décor in 2022.
Here’s how the rest of the product categories performed on a year-over-year percent-gain basis.
Overall sales in 2022 for the Mooresville, North Carolina-based retailer were $97.1 billion, that’s up 0.8 percent from $96.3 billion from fiscal 2021. Read more here.
