Jeld-Wen shutting down Iowa plant
Jeld-Wen, the N.C.-based door and window manufacturer, is shuttering its window plant in Grinnell, Iowa. According to a WARN notice filed in late January, 298 workers will be out of a job as of March 21. The same plant went through a round of layoffs in November 2024, which affected 152 employees.
It's been a tumultuous year for the company, which was recently forced to divest of its plant in Towanda, Pa., due to antitrust violations. The past year also saw Jeld-Wen close plants in Vista, California, and in Hawkins, Wisconsin, as well as its patio door facility in Wedowee, Alabama. The company also discontinued its Auraline brand of composite windows when it shuttered the Vista site.
As for the Grinnell closure, the company says it's a tough but necessary decision. A Jeld-Wen spokesperson told local CBS affiliate KCCI: "We value the contributions of our employees and have provided those affected with a competitive separation package and outplacement services to help provide a smooth transition. While decisions that impact people are never easy, we make them only after careful consideration and with the understanding that our actions today are necessary to position Jeld-Wen for long-term success.”
Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company operates facilities in 15 countries in North America and Europe and employs approximately 18,000 employees.
