The retail crime wave that has gripped much of the nation, including major urban centers such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, took a turn for the worse on April 19.
Blake Mohs, a 26-year-old Home Depot employee in the retailer’s loss prevention department, was shot and killed after trying to prevent the theft of electric tools at the retailer’s Pleasanton, California store. The store is located in Amador Valley, a suburb in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area
The alleged assailant tried to steal the tools by exiting through the store’s loading dock area before being confronted by Mohs.
Witnesses told police that a struggle took place as Mohs attempted to prevent the theft, which resulted in the victim being shot.
The Home Depot employee was unarmed and died after being transported to a local hospital.
According to Pleasanton Police, the alleged shooter — 32-year-old Benecia Knapps — tried to escape the crime scene in a car driven by 31-year-old David Guillory.
Alameda County Sheriff's Office deputies detained the suspects in Oakland shortly after the incident. The handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was also recovered, police said.
Additionally, police said a two-year-old child was inside the getaway vehicle. The child was reunited with other family members.
