Weak L&G is part of the story at Fred’s

Wet weather in March, plus the repercussions of the West Coast port shutdown took a toll on Memphis, Tennessee-based general merchandise retailer Fred’s.


In a sales update for March, the company’s CEO Jerry Shore said performance was negatively affected in spring seasonal and lawn and garden product categories.


“We expect that these sales will rebound in the upcoming months as spring merchandise is received,” he added.

Fred’s operates 661 discount general merchandise stores in the Southeastern United States. The company’s comparable-store sales for March increased 1.9%. In the same month last year comps decreased 1.2%.
