Throwback Thursday: Security sendup

2/20/2018

The July 19, 1982 edition of National Home Center News -- the predecessor to HBSDealer -- takes a look at how retailers handled their security hardware departments before "smart home" and "hack" ever entered the discussion.

"Security hardware, one of the more profitable product categories for home centers, is nonetheless a difficult one to build a  separate department around," read the article.

NHCN went on to talk to retailers about the importance of stocking these items in departments where consumers expect them to be.

"You can't afford to miss the sale of security hardware to a customer looking for a deadbolt in the hardware department, or a smoke alarm in electriclas," said Steve East of Central Hardware in St. Louis.

However, other retailers said their attempts to separate security from other departments didn't work out as well.
