Stihl Hardware All Stars: Ky., Md., Mo.

2/20/2018

It takes a little more to be a Stihl Hardware All Star.

Since 2011, HBSDealer has reached out to suppliers, distributors, manufacturers, vendors, retailers and homeowners in search of high-performing, service-oriented, community-minded hardware store, lumberyard or farm and ranch dealers worthy of All-Star status.

It’s a tribute to this industry that each year brings a surplus of high-quality nominations. The companies profiled have earned their place on the list of 50 — one from each state. And they join an elite fraternity of honorees.

Here’s to the class of 2017. And here's three stars worth gazing at.

Kentucky

Rough River Hardware

This store opened from the ground up on May 13, 2013, in Falls of Rough, and has since expanded 3,500 sq. ft. The result: double-digit growth every year. The Rough River Hardware mobile app provides offers and loyalty information to its on-the-go customers, with quick access to exclusive deals. Rough River is open seven days a week and has extended hours during evenings and weekends. “We believe in being open when our customers need us,” owner David Dillman said.

Maryland

Dyson Building Center

This fourth-generation business in Great Mills continues to push innovation. In 2015, Dyson became the first store in its county to be 100% solar powered. Other updates followed, including increasing the  size of its marine section, updating  the paint mixing system to include  a new larger color chart, a digital  scanner to match colors, and  updating DysonBuildingCenter.com  to become an online store. All 16 Dyson grandchildren have worked  in the business.

Missouri

M Kay Supply

M Kay Supply’s differentiator is providing the customer with personalized service coupled with a unique shopping experience. In fact, this 18,000-sq.-ft. store includes a deli where customers can buy milk, eggs and other food items. This was added after the local grocery store closed. “We have an exceptional product mix, something for everyone,” co-owner Malinda Milam said. “Our key to success is focusing on our customer,  listening to their needs and putting a smile  on their face.”
