Hardware All Stars: Maine, Md., Mass.
The most consistent trait of a stand-out store is almost always customer service. But it’s just the beginning of the retailer’s path to All-Star status.
Other factors, seen in HBSDealers 2016 class of Hardware All Stars include a reputation as a community cornerstone, an ability to serve the pro, an instinct for niche-building, a tangible feeling of family values and an ability to adapt, change, invest and grow.
Below are highlights from three honorees.
Maine
Rangeley Lakes Builders Supply
This second-generation family-owned operation has recently expanded to offer furniture, but it also keeps its finger in many pies by catering to Maine’s crucial seasonal demands with a reliable mix of new products. “We’re in a very unique geographic region, and for 33 years we have striven to provide the local community with both what they need and also the newest trends and technology,” said owner Virginia MacFawn. “We have diversified…to provide everything a client would need from the foundation up.”
Maryland
Kendall Hardware
With a general store feel, fourth-generation, family-owned Kendall Hardware includes a 2,500-sq.-ft. clothing department with Dickies, Carhartt, Red Wing, and more. But the focus of the store is on hardware essentials. Its comprehensive Husqvarna offering ranges from pressure washers to chainsaws. Steve Kendall makes the case for strong service and strong brands here.
Massachusetts
Shepley Wood Products
This Cape Cod one-stepper known for its millwork showrooms, yard cleanliness, and home-made pre-coating system was featured in a 1990 Bob Vila show. The coating system is still in use today. “We’re in the people business,” said Tony Shepley. “And by the way we happen to sell lumber and doors and windows and all of that, too.”
