Egg shortage fuels coop demand

OverEZ Chicken Coop sees heavy demand.

You might have noticed that there’s a shortage of eggs at the grocery store.

At Costco, two is the limit.

Consider, for instance, the scene at a New Jersey Costco Wholesale Club store in early February. Not only were all the regular large eggs missing from the shelves. A sign informed shoppers that the limit was 2 for the 24-count package of organic, free-range eggs.

According to media reports, the egg shortage is partly a result of an Avian flu outbreak that killed millions of hens in 2022.

That scarcity is fueling demand for chicken coops, according to Kirson Wenger, president of OverEZ Chicken Coop.

Wenger held court with a steady stream of hardware store dealers who visited his booth at the recent National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.

“Really good,” is how he described demand for the OverEZ Chicken Coops.

A differentiating factor for OverEZ is that the coops are crafted in two USA based locations, by Amish carpenters in Lancaster County, Pa., and by Amish-trained carpenters in Georgia.

Also, Wenger says the coops easy to assemble. A DIYer or home owner can assemble a small, medium or large coop in about 30 minutes. An XL and jumbo coop might take an hour.

“At OverEZ Chicken Coop, we got tired of seeing backyard chicken lovers not have good options for a long-lasting handsome coop, so we invented OverEZ Chicken Coops. They are really easy to ship, easy to assemble, and easy to move around your backyard,” he said. “Plus they make having backyard chickens easy and really fun.”

On the show floor, Wenger demonstrated the spacious interior and the doors that, when the coop is active with hens, open to reveal delicious-tasting fresh eggs.

A medium coop is fit for 10 birds while a Jumbo coop holds about 30 birds. The Farmhouse Large Chicken Coop shown in the photo sells for about $2,1999. OverEZ also sells chicken feeders and chicken waterers.

The chicken coops use building products and accessories from LP Building solutions, including LP SmartSide.
