ECU Health's 'Hardware Store Tour' raises cancer awareness

The initiative brings resources to those with an elevated risk for skin cancer.
8/1/2024

ECU Health, based in Greenville, N.C., is in the midst of its second "Hardware Store Tour."

Eve Stroud, community health improvement coordinator at ECU Health Duplin Hospital, has been providing cancer awareness information and free health screenings in hardware stores throughout Duplin County, a largely rural region where many folks work outside.

The Hardware Store Tour initiative began in 2023 as an effort to provide resources, information and support for people who may be at an elevated risk for skin cancer and other sun-related illnesses. According to ECU Health, Stroud and her team combine skin cancer education with free health screenings, such as blood pressure readings, cholesterol checks and glucose testing. In 2023, the team completed 37 health screenings and provided skin cancer education to 115 people in just three hardware store visits, per ECU Health.

“It is always rewarding to spend time in the community providing helpful health resources to those we serve,” said Stroud. “When it comes to caring for your own health and well-being, information and education can make all the difference. Through initiatives like the Hardware Store Tour, we’re hoping to help people understand their risk factors so they can better manage their health.”
