84 Lumber partners with Penguins for EmpowerHER Grant

3/8/2021

84 Lumber announced that it is teaming up with the Pittsburgh Penguins to launch the EmpowerHER Grant.

The grant will provide $25,000 to a woman-owned business in Western Pennsylvania.

With the EmpowerHER Grant, the Penguins and 84 Lumber aim to give back to local women entrepreneurs and businesswomen in support of Gender Equality Month during the month of March.

The grant will support a woman-owned business that has contributed to its own community at-large, especially throughout the pandemic.

“As a woman-owned business headquartered in Western Pennsylvania, partnering with the Penguins for the L.I.F.T. EmpowerHer Grant initiative is the perfect way for us to celebrate Women’s History Month,” said Amy Smiley, vice president of marketing at 84 Lumber Company. “This month and all year round, we are constantly looking for ways to support local businesses as well as local women within our communities."

Through March 18, fans can nominate a local woman-owned business in Western Pennsylvania that deserves the $25,000 grant. Finalists will be selected by March 23 and online voting will take place between March 24 through April 6.

"We can’t wait to connect with incredible entrepreneurs and award one deserving business with the EmpowerHer Grant,” Smiley said.

To submit a nomination, click here.

Those submitting nominations for their own business or a known deserving business will be asked to answer four questions:

  • What makes the business you are nominating important in your community?
  • What makes the business you are nominating deserving to win the EmpowerHER Grant?
  • What differentiates your business/the business you are nominating from others?
  • If nominating your own business, how would this $25,000 grant support your business? How would it make a difference both for the business and your community? If nominating a business, what would you like to see the $25,000 grant go towards improving or refining from a customer/client/employee perspective?

Businesses in the following counties are eligible: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland.

84 Lumber is a nationally certified woman-owned and -operated business through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).

The EmpowerHER Grant is a part of 84 Lumber’s L.I.F.T. (Leading & Inspiring Females to Thrive) program with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
