Wood stain is growing at a rate of 4.3% per year
U.S. demand for wood stain is forecast to rise 4.3% annually, reaching $1.7 billion by 2020, according to research from The Freedonia Group.
This growth is slightly slower from that of the 2010-2015 period, with construction expenditures normalizing after the post-recession recovery.
Within this market, furniture and decking applications make up nearly 60% of the demand.
However, cabinet applications will see the quickest increase in stain demand. Strong gains in cabinet sales and the sustained popularity of solid wood cabinetry are the primary drivers behind this.
Stain sales will also be driven by the convenience of stain-and-sealer combinations, the continued popularity of solid wood materials in furniture, and rising stain prices due to increasingly advanced formulations, like stain-and-sealer-in-one.
Residential markets will also drive the increases, owing to a combination of new housing construction and residential maintenance activities.
