REPORT: Is expanded logging the answer to California’s wildfires?

8/31/2018
Collectively, nearly 6,000 wildfires in California burned a total of 1.25 million acres, according to the  California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the National Interagency Fire Center.

Still active, the Mendocino Complex Fire has burned more than 459,000 acres while becoming the largest complex fire in the state's history. On Aug. 4 a national disaster was declared in Northern California.

The continuance of wildfires have lead to many questions and theories as to how the disaster can be contained and prevented in the future. For some, including the Trump Administration, increasing logging in the region has been proposed as a method of fire suppression.

Only a few large logging and timber milling operations remain in the region in what was once a pipeline of lumber.

In a report from NPR, the news agency examined whether a return to logging could be California’s answer.
