Readers Respond: American made

2/20/2018

A recent AP-GfK survey of consumers found that nearly 75% of Americans want to buy American, but say those items are too expensive (or hard to find).

The report gave another specific example. In it, one imaginary pair of pants cost $85 and is made in the USA. Another pair of the same fabric and design costs $50 and is an import. Two-thirds of the respondents said they’d buy the cheaper version.

But what about the hardware and building supply industry? HBSDealer asked for readers’ opinions about the impact of the “Made in USA” label. And early indications show warmer reception for Made-in-USA in the home improvement aisles.

Here’s what we learned so far (after 99 votes:)

37% — Mild. It might decide a jump ball on similarly priced products.

44% — Medium. It’s a factor, but not as much as price.

18% — Turbo-charged. Customers look for it, ask for it and pay for it.
