Massive product recall launched
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a massive recall of roll-up window shades and Roman shades because they pose a strangulation risk to young children. The CPSC has received reports of five deaths and 16 near-strangulations in Roman shades since 2006 and three deaths in roll-up blinds since 2001.
The products were sold by a variety of manufacturers and retailers, including department stores, home improvement stores, discount stores and home decor retailers like Pottery Barn and West Elm. Remedies vary among firms from repair kits to refunds.
The CPSC is recommending the use of cordless window coverings in all homes where children live or visit. Window treatments should have no hanging or accessible cords on the front, side or back of the product.
