Legal Brief: Lead Rule update
There’s change in the air in Washington — a good kind of change for those who have advocated for reform of the Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule.
Specifically, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will allow renovators to take a refresher course without mandatory “hands-on” training. The changes allow for online training every other recertification instead of every recertification. Renovators who take the online training will be certified for three years; renovators who take the hands-on training will be certified for five years.
Advocates of reform included the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association and the Windows and Door Manufacturers Association.
“NLBMDA is pleased with EPA’s decision to simplify the recertification process and that the agency listened to our concerns with the RRP Rule,” said Jonathan Paine, NLBMDA president and CEO. “Although NLBMDA preferred online-only training for recertification of all remodelers, the announcement is a welcome development in making compliance less burdensome.”
