Innovative pigment system
MicroShades®, from Koppers is a color pigment system that is forced deep into the wood cells during the pressure-treating process. The MicroShades system is not a surface coating. ProWood Dura Color®, CedarTone™ and Native Exotics™ are just a few of the brands available, featuring micronized pigments. Several building material suppliers have embraced these new products, in which the color is factory applied inside the wood. Their customers seemed to favor the new natural tones, too. They comment that the lumber is better looking and blends more easily into their landscaping projects. It’s a great way for a lumberyard to differentiate itself from another supplier that may be just a few miles away.
DIYers can save time and money by not having to stain their projects after construction. What’s more, long-term weathering tests confirm that pressure-treated lumber with micronized pigment retains an attractive color longer than other preserved wood products.
Contractors and consumers have been very positive about color-infused wood. Both noted their preference to shop at a building material supplier that carries pressure-treated products with color. They like the idea of a new looking product that saves time and money by eliminating the painting and staining normally needed after building an outdoor project. They also appreciated that the color penetrates into the wood, and isn’t just a surface coating. Consumers were asked if they would switch suppliers if pigmented deck and fence boards were available at a different retailer than their regular supplier. The majority responded that they would find a dealer that carries pigmented lumber products.
