Home Depot Foundation digs deeper for veterans

The Home Depot Foundation announced Wednesday that it was commiting an additional $3.9 million in grants to organizations that help provide housing to veterans.

"We know that too many veterans struggle with issues related to housing: nearly 60,000 U.S. veterans are homeless on any given night, and women veterans, many of whom have children, are the fastest-growing segment of this homeless population, while several million others live with a service-connected disability," said Kelly Caffarelli, president of The Home Depot Foundation. "As we work toward our mission of ensuring every veteran has a safe place to call home, we are committed to funding nonprofit organizations that address veterans' needs at every point on the housing continuum."

The breakdown of the funding includes $1.7 million to nonprofits that are repairing or constructing 323 units of permanent supportive housing for veterans.

Additionally, $800,000 is going to nonprofits that provide transitional housing; $400,000 is going to a nonprofit that offers permanent supportive housing to female veterans; and $875,000 is going toward providing home repairs and maintenance to 126 homes owned by veterans and their families.

This latest contribution brings the Foundation's total veteran housing commitment to $65.7 million since the spring of 2011.
