Contractor steals credit card data, police say
Police in Batavia, N.Y., have arrested a 32-year-old man suspected of working three jobs to gain access to customers’ credit card data so he could fraudulently purchase $22,000 in building materials. According to an article in The Batavian, Dustin Hurlburt made the purchases at Armor Building Supply, where he worked, using credit card numbers he obtained while also employed as a gas station attendant.
The purchases, made from October 2009 to December 2009, were made for a local building site, where Hurlburt worked as a contractor, police say.
After a three-month investigation, Hurlburt was arrested on March 5. Detectives executed a search warrant on a property in Bethany, N.Y., on March 23 and recovered thousands of dollars of building materials allegedly bought with stolen credit cards from Armor Building Supply, the newspaper reported.
Hurlburt is being charged with multiple counts of grand larceny. The U.S. Secret Service has joined the investigation, which is being led by the Batavia Police Department.
