USG’s announcement that it will be halting operations in Empire, Nev. early next year is leaving officials in the town, and neighboring Gerlach, concerned of a mass exodus, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal .
The company announced it will be closing its gypsum mine and wallboard manufacturing plant in the company owned town Jan. 31 due to poor demand.
The closure will affect approximately 92 workers, according to the article, but will leave no real employment opportunities in the area where much of the economy was tied to USG operations.
USG has agreed to allow workers living in the company owned housing- approximately 300 people- to remain until June of next year.
