Throwback Thursday: A Scoreboard from the past
The June 7, 1999 issue of ProDealer magazine, a special supplement to National Home Center News (the forerunner of HBSDealer), offered the following analysis of its list of annual Top 350 Pro Dealers:
“A surging housing market, powered by the country’s remarkably resilient economy, was the major force behind the strong sales.”
The analysis of the ’99 Pro Dealer Top 350 continued, with an observation plucked from today's headlines:
“Boom times also played a considerable role in the industry’s continuing consolidation, both by attracting new investor and in convincing a number of prominent independent and mid-size dealers that there might never be a better time to sell.”
Let’s look at the top-10 from 1999:
1. Carolina Holdings (changed its name to Stock Building Supply, acquired by BMC in 2015.)
2. 84 Lumber
3. BSL Holdings
4. Wickes Lumber
5. Building Materials Holding Corp.
6. Carter-Jones Lumber
7. Strober Organization
8. Foxworth-Galbraith Lumber
9. White Cap Industries
10. Hope Lumber & Supply
Note: The 2016 Pro Dealer Industry Scoreboard will be featured in the upcoming July/August issue of HBSDealer. The top 10 will look dramatically different from the above list.
