Obituary: Lanoga leader Daryl Nagel, 77

2/20/2018

The former CEO of Lanoga Corporation and a 45-year lumber industry veteran, Daryl Nagel died peacefully June 13 at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 77.

Born in Arlington, Minnesota in 1939, Nagel began his career at Botsford Lumber Company while still in high school. He received a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota and later received an Advanced Management degree from Harvard University. While in college he worked for Reserve Supply and then moved to Winona, Minnesota, where he began his career with United Building Centers (Lanoga Corporation) and quickly rose from VP to president.

At Lanoga in Redmond, Washington, he was the catalyst behind the corporation’s amazing growth, and during his time there the company grew from 150 stores to over 400 with more than $1 billion in sales in 1998.

Said Kodiak Building Partners Chairman Paul Hylbert, who replaced Nagel after his retirement from Lanoga in 2000: "He and his team built a fine company in a very professional manner."

Nagel was respected and trusted by industry peers, and was often referred to in the industry as “the Quiet Giant.” He loved his career and his family and he diligently worked to succeed in both areas.

During his retirement, Nagel lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, with Joan, his wife of 55 years.

He is survived by his wife Joan, their three children and seven grandchildren. Visitation and funeral will be held in Scottsdale June 22-23.
