EPA sticks to its guns over lead paint rule

4/25/2018
The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association expressed disappointment in the latest development regarding the Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting rule. The EPA published its review of the RRP rule, and concluded that the rule should remain unchanged.

The NLBMDA has long lobbied for changes to the rule -- particularly as test kits have proven problematic for home owners.

In a note to NLMBDA members,  Ben Gann, the NLBMDA's Vp of legislative affairs, wrote: "NLBMDA, along with other remodeling industry stakeholders, have met regularly with EPA officials regarding the ongoing challenges with RRP rule compliance. Although the agency’s findings are disappointing, they are not surprising. EPA defended the rule despite acknowledging in the report that the lead paint test kits approved by the Agency for compliance do not meet the rule’s false positive standard."

According to Gann, the EPA says it will work with groups like the NLBMDA to "minimize any potential unfavorable impacts," of the rule.  The NLBMDA's National Policy Agenda describes the RRP Rule as a misguided and harmful to business, causing uncertainty in the LBM industry and causing delays in home repairs and renovations.
