Jasper Lumber Company, based in Jasper, Ala., is nearing completion on an investment of more than $135 million to upgrade its sawmill facility. According to the city of Jasper, work began on mill improvements in 2020 and will reach completion in 2026. “This is huge for Jasper and comes at a time when many companies are looking at ways to downsize,” said Jasper Mayor Gary Cowen. “Jasper Lumber has long been a major employer in our city and is making an investment that really shows their commitment to the area.”

Production capacity will increase to nearly 225 million board feet annually, up from 65 million, through mechanical and technological upgrades in the mill that will require a highly skilled labor force to operate and maintain the mill. Plant Manager Cliff Beall said: “This entire investment is based on the dedication of our existing workforce and their commitment to embrace the opportunity to upgrade their skills and operate a state-of-the-art sawmill. We are excited about this project and its positive impact on our employees and the community.”

Jasper Industrial Development Board (JIDB) Chairman Jerry Byars commented: “This project will result in Jasper Lumber exponentially increasing its yearly production. It’s a big deal for Jasper industrial development that an existing company like Jasper Lumber is making this kind of investment while providing their employees with the skillset to operate their new equipment at higher career opportunities.”

Green Suttles, JIDB Executive Director, said the impact will reach far beyond Jasper Lumber. “Area harvesting and transport for the wood required to feed the mill will increase, and this will lead to other offshoot job opportunities, stemming from the investment made in the mill.”

“The most exciting thing is the technological upgrade to the facility and the higher skilled jobs available to their employees. Electrical and digital maintenance skills will be required, and with the upcoming developments in workforce training at Bevill State Community College and our local school system, this will be a catalyst for a more skilled workforce in Jasper and will lead to a higher living wage for our labor force,” said Mayor Cowen.
