Get ready for a heart-to-heart with Hartmann

2/20/2018

True Value CEO John Hartmann had a lot of diplomatic, official-sounding things to say about his upcoming role on CBS series "Undercover Boss." But, if the show's established formula is any indication, things are bound to get emotional for the co-op and its leader.

Imagine, for a second, that the segment goes exactly as Hartmann indicated in his official statement. He dresses up like a forgotten cult figurehead, works a couple forklifts and cash registers, and encounters only industrious employees with chipper attitudes.

The thing to keep in mind is that A+ performance may very well be a topic of neverending interest at the General Session of the Fall Reunion. But viewers at home will demand a more revealing look at Hartmann, and if he's like most CEOs who go undercover, we'll probably see him get a little misty-eyed.

That's assuming the emotions don't manifest in outright anger, like they did for Donatos chairwoman Jane Grote Abell when she discovered a delivery driver was smoking weed on the job.

But one thing "Undercover Boss" has pulled off with some consistency is cramming multiple tearjerkers into each episode, whether they're tales of hardship from unsuspecting employees or personal traumas experienced by the CEOs themselves.

Then again, given Hartmann's previous experience going undercover as a former FBI agent, it's not altogether unlikely that he'll be one of the few to retain his poker face on the show.

Whatever the case, it wouldn't be the first time Hartmann offered up a never-before-seen side of his personality. Can you find the motocross executive?
